Tomorrow Matters Too

While watching Buletin Utama a couple of days back, it suddenly hit me that practically all our Ministers are completely unable of public speaking.

OK, actually, we all know they can't speak in public. It's just that watching the news will make you wonder how on Earth they ever made it to politics in the first place. They make Barack Obama look like Shakespeare in comparison (a bit harsh, maybe).

That got me thinking about the future of Malaysian politics.

Najib is 61.

His deputy is older than he is.

The majority of the ministers in his Cabinet are in the 60-70 year old range despite the the fact that 77% of Malaysia's population are below the age of 54.

The only one I'd consider young is Khairy Jamaluddin at 38 (and at least he's good at getting his opinions across),

Where are the rest?

For comparisons' sake, the British PM David Cameron is 48. That's younger than almost everyone in our Cabinet. Chancellor George Osborne is 43. He's younger than all bar KJ.

James Bond once told Q (sorry that's the best quote I can think of at the moment): youth is no guarantee of innovation, but maybe the time is right for our leaders to start thinking about tomorrow.
