Haze

Just to illustrate how bad the haze is in KL right now, I could not see One Utama from the TTDI flyover on LDP. That's probably a distance of about 800 meters.

My clothes smell of smoke, my sheets and blankets smell of smoke, my pillow smells of smoke and my goddamn couch smells of smoke.

That's how bad it is.

It's also an example of how economic considerations will always win against environmental concerns.

Slash-and-burn is probably the fastest, cheapest and most effective way of clearing huge tracts of land. That's why people (and perhaps even corporations) will always find a way to do it even if they manage to pass the blame on to someone else.

Since somebody somewhere is making money, there is a total lack of political will to actually put a stop to all this nonsense. Every June we get haze. Every June, the Prime Ministers of Malaysia and Singapore will get their speech-writers to come up with a piece denouncing Indonesia, summits will be held to discuss this crap and when the smoke goes away, all is forgotten.

This is why haze happens - just like it did in 97, 98. 99, 00, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10, 11, 12, 13 and you can bloody well count on seeing it again in 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20.

God bless all of us.
