All talk, no action

Our Government has to take a more serious approach to the conservation of environment. The issue of illegal land-clearing in Kelantan, Kedah and Pahang are not new ones. They have been highlighted for ages and the fact that The Star keeps reporting them every few months shows that everything is being swept under the carpet.

The fact-box above shows that (including today's edition) The Star has front-paged land-clearing in the Cameron Highlands three times in the past seven months. The complete lack of action is shocking, to say the least.

What's even more concerning is that whenever action is taken, it tends to be very vague in nature. In this article, for example, the Kedah Mentri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir is quoted as saying "logging activities in the state will be temporarily ceased to enable us to conduct the environmental impact assessment (EIA) in areas involved" before ominously adding, "They will resume upon the EIA’s recommendations."

What then, is the point of an EIA, YB?

It's high-time somebody took tangible action. Lip-service alone isn't going to cut it.
