Insanity

  1. Somebody somewhere pulls up statistics about how Bumiputeras are still lagging behind economically despite years of affirmative action
  2. Somebody somewhere rebuts aforementioned statistic by pointing out how non-Bumiputeras are doing alright despite have to work much harder while calling for an end to affirmative action and a return to a level playing field for all
  3. Somebody somewhere rebuts the aforementioned rebuttal by bringing up the existence of vernacular schools.
  4. Argument ensues. Argument goes round in circles until everyone gets bored and things cool down.
  5. Somebody somewhere raises point #1 again.
  6. Repeat ad infinitum.

That just about sums up my country at the moment. We're stuck arguing the same old things while our neighbours and peers move forward relatively unencumbered by pointless debates.

And if you really think about it, these arguments are essentially just an extension of the ultimate Malaysian conundrum of whose ancestors landed here first.

When will people realise that the winning solution is one which involves everyone losing just a little bit?
